Clean Water
Why it matters
Clean water is essential for every family and every community. We depend on water every day to care for ourselves and our families and to stay safe and healthy.
In the Luangwa Valley, many residents don’t have convenient access to safe, clean water. Without reliable access to water, people resort to digging holes in the sand or traveling to polluted rivers to gather water in dangerous conditions. Across Zambia, only about half of people in rural areas have basic drinking water services. In rural areas, only 28% of residents have access to basic sanitation services and only 15% have access to a handwashing facility with soap and water.
People, usually women and girls, often travel long distances to gather the water they need for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Many of these water sources carry risk of illness and can lead to dangerous human-wildlife conflict as humans risk encountering wildlife as they travel to water sources. In addition to the risks this poses every day, the need to collect water prevents women and girls from pursuing education and career opportunities. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, women and girls spend an estimated 40 billion hours a year collecting water.
When clean water is available, entire communities have the opportunity to thrive.
Providing Community Boreholes
Dazzle Africa is proud to partner with The Bushcamp Company to ensure families in Eastern Province, Zambia have access to clean water. These boreholes pull water from deep underground and are located in central community areas where they can be accessed by multiple households (typically around 350 residents per borehole). Residents typically pump clean, safe water 3 to 4 times per day to meet their household needs. Generous Dazzle donors & partners have funded 82 boreholes so far, providing clean water to approximately 29,000 people daily.
